Using dummies

  • Try to wean your baby off their dummy by 12 months old

  • Dummies stop babies from babbling which is an important step in learning to talk

  • Learning to talk can be difficult, so toddlers need lots of practise

  • A dummy may stop your child from chatting with you

  • If your toddler is still using a dummy, always ask him/her to take it out before you talk to each other
For information about advantages and disadvantages of using dummies, and whether they affect speech, visit the Speech and Language UK website.
For help and advice, contact your child’s Health Visitor or visit the Wye Valley NHS Trust website.
