If you have a permanent condition restricting your mobility and are registered with a Herefordshire GP practice, please talk with your doctor who may refer you to the Herefordshire NHS wheelchair service based at Belmont, Hereford.
The purpose of the Herefordshire NHS wheelchair service is to meet the clinical needs of individuals with a permanent disability and requirement for a wheelchair to promote independence to allow them to carry out daily activities predominately in their home.
The wheelchair service has strict guidelines to determine who it can provide equipment for, and unfortunately cannot provide wheelchairs for everyone. The resources are targeted at those who need wheelchairs to help with activities within the home, rather than those who may require a wheelchair for outdoor mobility only.
To find out about NHS wheelchair services, as well as information about choosing mobility equipment, wheelchairs and scooters please visit the NHS Choices website.
The Disabled Living Foundation is a national organisation giving independent help and advice to people with a disability, visit their website for details.
You can find out about purchasing equipment in our Daily living equipment section, here you will find links to organisations where you can purchase wheelchairs and mobility aids.
If you are entitled to an NHS wheelchair loan but wish to purchase your own wheelchair please talk to the staff at the Herefordshire NHS wheelchair service first for advice.
If you are considering the loan or purchase of a wheelchair it is important to consider where you are going to use it, how you will store it and where you will charge it, if needed. Depending upon who owns your property you may need to consider additional equipment or adaptations to facilitate access, storage and charging. Please go to our sections on Daily living equipment and Adapting your home for further information.
