Caring for a child with additional needs

Being a parent can be hard. Parenting a child with additional needs can bring unique challenges as you support your child in their development and to get the care they need. This can sometimes mean you may have less time and energy for yourself or other members of the family.  This can cause some parents to feel overwhelmed. If you look after a disabled child and have parental responsibility for them, you may benefit from having some extra support to help you manage.

Find out more about support available from the CarersUK website.

Top Tips

  • It's okay to ask for help. Speak to family and friends about what you need.
  • Put yourself in your child's shoes. They may deal with things differently so try and think about things from their perspective.
  • Look after yourself as well. Take some quality time for yourself each day.
